What this course covers

We offer English Language pathways for learners at all levels, from foundational literacy to advanced analytical writing. Programmes are aligned with major UK exam boards including City & Guilds, Pearson/Edexcel and OCR.

Functional Skills English

Entry 1–Level 2

Practical, everyday English for work, study and life.

  • Speaking, listening and confident communication

GCSE English Language

Mainstream GCSE pathway

Functional Skills English (Entry 1–Level 2)

Focus: practical, everyday English for work, study and life.

  • Speaking, listening and confident communication
  • Reading real-world texts: letters, emails, adverts, instructions
  • Writing for authentic purposes: complaints, job applications, forms, messages
  • Grammar, spelling and sentence structure
  • Interpreting information, recognising tone and comparing sources

Functional Skills is ideal for adults, ESOL learners, returners to study and anyone who needs a confidence-building route towards Level 2.

GCSE English Language

  • Reading non-fiction texts across the 19th–21st centuries
  • Analysing writers’ language and structural choices
  • Evaluating viewpoints and perspectives
  • Creative writing: narrative and descriptive tasks
  • Transactional writing: articles, letters, speeches, reviews
  • Preparation for the Spoken Language endorsement
